Banmira Specialist School is a vibrant school of more than 260 students and 120 dedicated staff who work tirelessly to progress the whole child. The explicit teaching of Literacy and Numeracy are key priorities as are the development of independent living and learning skills. The Arts and Health & Physical Education are an integral part of the curriculum. Students attend Banmira from 3 years of age in Early Education up to 18 years in VPC (Victorian Pathways Certificate).

Early Education

Verney Road School

Our Early Education Program caters for children from the age of 2.8 years. It is a centre-based program that provides a support service to parents and the family. It also provides stimulation and motivation for the child, with the aim of reducing the handicapping effect of the disability or impairment.

Parents, staff, professional advisers, Paediatricians and therapists work together to ensure that each child can achieve their maximum potential. We aim to develop individual programs in the areas of gross motor, fine motor, self help, language, creative play and behaviour management. We also offer support to Preschools and Daycare centres where the child is enrolled.

Junior Campus

Junior Campus

Our Junior Campus supports students from Foundation (Prep). This purpose-built campus, opened in 2025, includes a Community Hub with a Sensory Room, Perceptual Motor Program space, Library, Art Room, and Parent/Wellbeing Hub.

Class sizes are intentionally small, usually 8–10 students per class, with a teacher and at least one Education Support Staff member (ESS). Every student has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) developed collaboratively with families, teachers, and support staff, setting personalised goals in areas such as English, Mathematics, Communication, and Personal & Social Capabilities.

Students learn the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, with a strong focus on:

  • Developing communication and social skills

  • Building independence and self-regulation

  • Explicit teaching of Literacy and Numeracy

  • Participation in Specialist Programs such as Music Therapy, Physical Education, and Art/Performing Arts

We aim to nurture the whole child in a safe, respectful, and engaging environment where students are supported to achieve their full potential.

Senior Campus

Junior Campus

Our Senior Campus, located on Verney Road, supports students in Years 7–12 and prepares them for life beyond school. The campus features tailored learning spaces, including a ‘Mini Woolies’ supermarket, gym, cooking and homecrafts areas, and customised classrooms for secondary learners. It is also home to Banmira Care, our High-Intensity Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) program.

The majority of senior students undertake the Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC), delivered over three years in Year 10, 11 & 12 with an emphasis on applied, interest-based learning projects. VPC equips students with skills for work, further training, and independent living. Subjects include:

  • VPC Literacy

  • VPC Numeracy

  • VPC Work Related Skills (WRS)

  • VPC Personal Development Skills (PDS)

Students may also participate in School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships (SBATs), where they work two days per week and study at school three days. Trainees gain practical workplace experience, receive accredited training, and earn a part-time wage, giving them valuable skills and pathways to employment.

In addition to VPC, students engage in Specialist Programs such as Music, Physical Education, and Art, alongside targeted programs to build independence, communication, and daily living skills.

Our Senior School curriculum is supported by our Allied Health, Wellbeing, and Inclusion Teams, who work alongside teachers to provide additional therapeutic supports, enhance curriculum delivery, and ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive.

Outside School Hours Care

Banmira Care

Run by our school council, and fully funded by the Department of Education, Banmira Care welcomes all students from the school to our after-school care program.

The service operates from Banmira Senior Campus on Verney Road. Children attending the junior school children will be bused to the Verney Road campus for care and will be collected by families from there.

Our service is run by our school, for our school and its community. We delight in providing safe, fun and relaxing care for students.

Banmira Care is:

  • a social and educational program designed around each child’s needs and interests, regardless of their age or ability
  • approved as an outside school hours care service by the Department of Education and regulated by Quality Assessment and Regulation Division
  • supporting our school communities’ parents and carers engagement in work and study
  • FREE

Some of our regular activities include cooking, water and sensory play, gaming, building and tinkering, outdoor play, sports, music and arts and crafts. We serve
afternoon tea each day as part of our program.

Our service is currently running from Monday to Wednesday, from 3pm to 5:45pm, with a view to offer 5 days a week in term 2. We are also currently gauging interest in running a school holiday program in term 2.
